Maeven - Maeven

The all girl, all stunning, all glam-rocking quartet that is Maeven rise to their mission statement impeccably proving that girls can rock as hard (if not harder) than any guys with their brilliant self titled second album. Having already toured the USA, recorded their first album in Los Angeles, supported bands such as Trashlight Vision, Disarm and New Generation Superstars Maeven seem potentially on the spur of a huge upwards trajectory.

Their music is a blend of Punk, Classic Rock, Glam & Grunge and anybody into all, or any, of these genres would definitely warm to their fresh take on things. The album starts with sleazy feedback then literally thunders in with Queen of Hearts. Tight, precise drums & bass keep this track (and the entire album) pumped and flowing. With a timid, yet strong, angry vocal this song builds up and breaks down, but keeps on rolling.

The consistency of the album is good, so standout tracks aren't too obvious and are more down to preference. One Night In Hollywood is one favourite with a cynical, yet envious interpretation of the music industry with lyrics such as you wanna be a star that's fine, live the life and they will fuck you over on top of sleazy, dark melodies and great guitar. Another favourite is Roxy Rose which opens with wah guitar and breaks into more poetic, well sung, well-written lyrics for example Ivory skin, emerald eyes light up as you walk in the room, burgundy lips, hair like fire her gaze is burning too giving it an exciting, sexy and dirty sound. Towards the end of the song a typical, but classic solo breaks out of almost nowhere, and for those of you into your guitar solos you're bound to enjoy the abundance and quality of them on this album. It's not that often that you see girls ripping and shredding their guitars (not to sound sexist, but sadly it's true) but this woman certainly knows how to blow minds on the guitar.

With an average track length of around four minutes, and not a massive amount of variation within them Maeven could perhaps cut the lengths of some tracks, but apart from that this is a good listen, with great vibe, that combines a lot of classic music that has gone before them. Well worth a listen.
